Emily was happy to come to Canada with her family when they emigrated from Germany. She courageously faced the hardships of frontier life and difficulties of there maintaining her faith in God. Tempted t be bitter and sensitive because of a crippled leg, she nevertheless beomes a sweet young woman as she moves from girlhood to young womanhood.

This story was written back in 1958, and is the sweetest story of a young girl’s learning a new language and living without are interesting reading for history. Emily’s realistic faith in God and the problems she faces in the story of being a cripple when she had to walk long distances in order to beat winter storms, really help you see how difficult life was.
I really enjoyed this simple story of a young girl and her family, I am not sure which year it is set in, but early 1800’s is what I think. She does get engaged in the end, but there is little romantic talk in the book.
