My Review:

Unending Devotion
By Jody Hedlund

Reviewed by Martha Artyomenko

Lily Young. Photographer’s assistant. She travels with the photographer into the logging camps and towns, but she has a different agenda. She is searching amongst the women that are outcasts of society for her little sister. She plans on engaging in her normal activities, but when she arrives in Harrison, Michigan, a young man with spectacles confuses her goals.
Connell McCormick, son of Irish immigrants and champion knife thrower, is trying to prove his worth to his baron of a father by harvesting the green gold of the time, virgin pines. Can he pursue his goals without getting distracted by Lily?

This book is a book of love and devotion, between, not as you would assume at first, a man and woman, but rather between sisters. Lily searches for the sister she thought she was doing right by, but is plagued by guilt in what maybe she should have done instead. The historical facts surrounding the logging camps, the brothels, and the men that ran both is stunningly portrayed in this novel based on a time period between 1870-1880.

I especially enjoyed the story of redemption. It is not easy when you love someone, and they make choices that are beyond our control, that we know are the wrong ones. Ms. Hedland really uses this story to show how sometimes those we love can hurt us. It brought to mind how we have come full circle with the slave trade involving women in the 1800’s and how our modern world is still participating in human trafficking as well.

The author did an excellent job of writing a story that is hard to put down and will have you looking for her name in the future! – Martha
